Cities in Brazil like Sao Paulo produce enormous amounts of solid waste, producing more than 161, 000 tons of garbage everyday. Most of the garbage is then put in landfills, which continuously have to be expanded taking away natural areas and making surrounding soil toxic and unable to sustain life.
Acid Rain and Contaminated Water
Sao Paulo’s extremely busy and congested streets lead to massive amounts of air pollution, damaging the air quality and producing acid rain. Contaminates from industrial waste make their way into the groundwater, making it no longer safe to drink, so during droughts Sao Paulo has very little access to clean water.
